Tornado Medical Systems is an early-stage medical imaging and spectroscopy company. We develop innovative and proprietary devices that provide clinicians and scientists with improved tools to detect and diagnose disease. We combine rigorous design and engineering with world-class scientific and medical expertise to deliver distinctive value to our commercial partners.
The successful candidate will work under the supervision of our Lead Optical Engineer in the design and development of optical sub-systems and opto-mechanical components of scientific and medical devices. The Optical Technologist/Engineer will participate in all stages of medical device development from evaluation and recommendation of specific concepts, development of appropriate designs, through to management of external vendors in the assembly and testing of sub-components.
Duties and responsibilities
- Assist the Lead Optical Engineer in evaluation of alternative designs through the development of prototype systems.
- Assist in the planning and execution of design verification activities.
- Design and execute experiments to capture data that will be used by other teams (e.g., business development) to promote products developed at Tornado.
- Develop initial work instructions for assembly of opto-mechanical systems and refine the instructions through production of prototype systems.
- Plan and document the intended approach to integrating Tornado’s flagship HTVS technologies and components with other optical systems for the purpose of evaluating product feasibility.
- Execute above plan to illustrate the feasibility of integrating Tornado’s flagship technologies with other technologies.
- Systematically track versions and configurations throughout integration.
- Perform all design and testing activities per Tornado’s design control processes.
- Product development processes at Tornado are intended to be ISO13485 compliant.
- Work in collaboration with Test Engineer to resolve issues identified by the Test Engineer through the use of issue tracking system.
Desired Skills & Experience
- Degree in Physics with a specialization in optics or systems, optical or mechanical engineering disciplines. Diploma in these fields is accepted if supplemented with appropriate experience.
- Self-driven member with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Should be a team player with the right attitude towards resolving system issues with other team members.
- Prior experience with modelling tools (e.g., Zemax) is an asset.
- Experience with mechanical design tools (e.g., Solidworks) is an asset.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision is a must.
- Exposure to working under design controls in a regulated industry (e.g., aerospace, military, or medical device sector) is an asset.
