A few of our engineers

Donny CheungDonny Cheung
Senior Scientist
PhD, University of Waterloo

Donny obtained a doctorate in Mathematics from the University of Waterloo and worked as a postdoctoral research fellow in the area of quantum computer algorithms. He has broad expertise in the design and analysis of computer algorithms, with experience in optical systems and image processing. He works primarily on medical image reconstruction algorithms, in close collaboration with Tornado’s software systems group.

Jason SilverJason Silver
Clinical Liaison
MASc, Carleton University

During his graduate studies as a Biomedical Engineer, Jason founded a research group focused on developing novel ultrasonic technologies. Coming to Tornado from a leading cancer research center, Jason works to integrate the commercial, clinical and technical development of Tornado’s medical imaging devices.

Elizabeth Munro
Applications Specialist
MASc, University of Toronto

Elizabeth studied Physics at McGill University and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Toronto where she specialized in imaging and tissue optics. Previously, she worked for a research- to-commercialization organization (the Ontario Centres of Excellence) prior to joining the Tornado team. She is now managing, developing and evaluating new technology in support of Tornado’s commercial efforts.

Nanophotonics

Art Nitkowski
Research and Development Scientist
PhD, Cornell University

Art received his PhD from Cornell University in Applied Physics where his research focused on combining nanophotonics with microfluidics for biomedical applications. He previously worked at a leading government research laboratory and has experience in both free space and integrated optics. Currently, Art is working within Tornado’s nanophotonics division developing devices for on-chip spectroscopy.

Nicholas Sherwood
Research and Development Scientist
PhD, Cornell University

As a graduate of Cornell University, Nick’s research focused on optical interconnect devices and networks for hybrid multi-core processors. His experience in nanophotonic technology ranges from fabrication of devices to designing full optical systems. At Tornado, Nick works on future compact medical imaging devices.

Kyle Preston
Research and Development Scientist
PhD, Cornell University

Kyle’s graduate work at Cornell University in Electrical and Computer Engineering involved the development of materials, devices and systems for high-speed data communication using silicon photonics. He has previously worked in government and industry labs and is currently developing integrated optics technology for spectroscopy applications within Tornado’s nanophotonics division.

Software

Greg Toombs
Software Developer
MSc, Lakehead University

Greg obtained a Master of Science degree in electrical and computer engineering from Lakehead University and is a certified electronics engineering technologist. He has experience in several fields of hardware and software engineering. He works in Tornado’s electronics prototyping laboratory and contributes to the software systems group.

Optics

Andrew Berkeley
Optical Engineer
MASc, Eng, University of Hull, UK

Andrew graduated with a Master’s Degree in Optical Electronic Engineering Systems from the University of Hull in the United Kingdom. He has a broad range of skills relating to the biophotonics industry. Research and development of medical optical imaging systems is Andrew’s main focus at Tornado.

Brandon DesRoches
Optical Engineer
MSc, Brock University

Brandon obtained his Masters in condensed matter and material physics from Brock University and has worked on optical, magnetic and electric systems. Coming to Tornado from a diverse workplace background Brandon now lends his skills to Tornado’s optical department as a project team lead.

Nick Kitchener
Project Manager
BSc, University of Auckland

Nick has extensive experience both as a founder and consultant to various hi-tech start-ups and growth phase companies around the world. His technical expertise in computer science, consumer electronics and his proven ability leading geographically distributed development teams enables Nick to be an effective communicator and coordinator for the talented scientists, engineers and business leaders within Tornado Medical Systems.
